October is National Co-Op Month, a time when more than 300,000 cooperatives across the country celebrate what makes us unique. At your cooperative, that starts with you, our membership.

Eighty-six years ago, local leaders came together to bring electricity to rural families who would have otherwise been without it. Their vision was simple: neighbors helping neighbors so that everyone could thrive. This same principle continues to guide us today, and we exist to provide safe and reliable energy. Equally important, though, is our focus on enriching and improving the quality of life for our members and the community we serve.

Seven core principles guide cooperatives, and these principles set us apart. One way you might see our involvement is our concern for the community. As a locally based cooperative with employees who also live in the community, we have a special bond and an obligation to be an integral part of the community. We do this through partnerships and financial contributions to our local schools, youth programs, economic development agencies, and so much more. We know that when we give back, we are helping to strengthen the community.

I am proud of the work that we do to support the youth through programs like the Junior Board of Directors, Trades Camp, Youth Tour to Washington D. C., and Camp Kilowatt. Young people arent just the leaders of tomorrow; theyre already making a difference today. We want to support them by giving them opportunities and teaching them about the co-op, too. As a member, you have helped support your fellow members and neighbors through Operation Round Up. To date, over $1.8 million has been reinvested in the community to support local non-profits that are helping area residents. You are helping us to change lives.

While you may only think of Kankakee Valley REMC as your utility provider, we hope you will recognize the many aspects that set us apart.
