10-year-old Emmett Betz and his 8-year-old brother, Bennett, know something about what makes life sweet. Together with their mom, Jennifer, they are the team behind 2 Guys Pies. This fundraising endeavor sells homemade pies to help farming families affected by farm-related loss or injury.

The Betz family suffered a tragic farming accident in 2016 that left Jennifer without her husband and the boys without their dad. For several years, they have been searching for a way “to honor my late husband, their father, Andrew,” Jennifer explained. After much prayer and a friend’s suggestion, they created 2 Guys Pies to give back to the farming community that Andrew loved so much.

Because the boys routinely bring pies to family events, the idea of making these sweet desserts didn’t come out of the blue. Emmett has always impressed his relatives with his signature “cinnamon roll cherry” pie, and Bennett leaves bellies full with his delightful peanut butter pie. Since starting their fundraising efforts, they have added three new pie flavors: birthday cake, banana split and root beer float.

Finding recipes to try has been a breeze, thanks to easy-to-navigate online options such as Pinterest and Facebook. Jennifer’s in-laws and parents are honored to be the official 2 Guys Pies taste testers. Of course, the boys are also always willing to help with that task. “Tasting them is the best part, and you get free pie,” Bennett said. Emmett added that he likes taste testing, but he also appreciates “making the pies.”

As a community member who most likely enjoys pie (who doesn’t?), it’s easy for you to contribute to this touching fundraising effort. “Order pies!” Jennifer suggested, with a smile. It is that simple. In addition, spreading positive word of mouth, sharing their Facebook posts and bidding on their pies in local auctions are just a few more ways you can help. “We are brand-spanking new,” Jennifer said, noting that the team is learning as they go, and the more orders that come in, the better.
