Sale of water heaters and associated load-management programs discontinued

Carroll White REMC is discontinuing the sale of water heaters and the associated load-management programs for water heaters, pool pumps, and air conditioners, effective immediately.

The load management program, introduced in the early 1980s, utilized Demand Response Unit (DRU) switches on electric water heaters to reduce peak demand on the electric grid. Credits received from our power supplier helped offset demand costs and supported discounted water heater sales and free repair services for participating members. Over the past decade, this strategy was expanded to include air conditioners and pool pumps.

Due to changes in the power market, improved performance data related to DRU switches, and evolving federal energy efficiency requirements, the cooperative has determined that these programs are no longer sustainable.

The U.S. Department of Energy will begin enforcing the NAECA 4 water heater efficiency standards on May 6, 2029. These standards will effectively phase out electric tank water heaters larger than 35 gallons, requiring the use of heat pump technology to reduce overall energy consumption.

As a member-owned cooperative, Carroll White REMC is committed to making informed decisions that prioritize affordability and cost control for our members. Ending these programs allows us to continue meeting that responsibility.

WHAT MEMBERS NEED TO KNOW

• Free repair services for water heaters currently enrolled in the program will continue through the close of business on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2026.

• Existing inventory of 40- and 50-gallon electric water heaters will be sold until supplies are exhausted.

• An $800 rebate remains available for qualifying heat pump water heater purchases.

• The bill credits for pool pumps and air conditioners are also discontinued.
