Now is the time to build your emergency kit

As spring arrives, the weather often becomes more unpredictable. In our part of Indiana, sudden storms can cause widespread damage and even power outages. Now is the time to gather supplies to build an emergency kit, so your family can be prepared.

In the event of a power outage, the following items in your emergency supply kit are particularly important:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation)
  • Food (at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • Cell phone with chargers and a
  • Flashlight
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries, battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties (for personal sanitation)
  • Manual can opener (for food)

Consider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:

  • Prescription medications
  • Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes and diaper rash cream
  • Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives
  • Pet food and extra water for your pet
  • Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
  • Complete change of clothing appropriate for the current season and sturdy shoes
