Jay County REMC’s tree trimming crew consists of Chris Gage, Justin Fenning, and Josh Jackson.

Before storms ever hit or outages make headlines, a small crew is already at work keeping the lights on. At Jay County REMC, tree trimmers Chris Gage, Justin Fennig, and Josh Jackson play a vital role by clearing branches and managing vegetation along power lines. Their work helps prevent outages, protect equipment, and keep our community safely connected every day.

Gage brings the precision and problem-solving he developed in welding, Fenning adds hands-on experience from construction, and Jackson contributes the grit and adaptability he learned as a septic pumper. Together, their diverse backgrounds translate into a crew that’s resourceful, safety-focused, and comfortable working in challenging conditions. Whether it’s navigating tight spaces, operating equipment, or making quick decisions in the field, their combined experience helps them tackle each job efficiently and keep power flowing for the members they serve.

The crew also rotates responsibilities throughout the day, ensuring each job is done efficiently while maintaining a constant focus on safety. One team member always serves as a dedicated spotter, watching surroundings, equipment, and overhead hazards to protect both the crew and the public. As the foreman Gage explained, “Safety is of the utmost importance to us and can be a matter of life and death” That shared commitment keeps their work precise, coordinated, and above all, safe.

Communication and awareness from the public also play an important role in keeping the crew safe while they’re on the job. Members can help by slowing down, staying alert, and giving crews plenty of space when they’re working along roadways. As Fenning reminds everyone, “If you see our cones, slow down” That simple action can make a big difference, helping ensure the crew can focus on their work and return home safely at the end of the day.

The crew’s work takes them across the entire service area — from Monroe to Winchester — so they appreciate members keeping an eye out and letting them know when trees are getting too close to power lines. That way, they can address concerns as they’re already working nearby. Just as important, the crew understands the value members place on their property. As Jackson shared, “When it comes to trees in people’s front yards we have an understanding and a respect for the members because that’s their property and we want it to look nice” He added, “We’ve all been to school to learn proper pruning and tree care, to not only benefit REMC but the health of the trees”

At Jay County REMC, the tree trimming crew plays a critical role in keeping our system strong and reliable. Their work may not always be seen, but it’s essential to the service our members count on every day. They are an incredibly important part of our team, and we are truly grateful to have them serving our cooperative. Through their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to safety, they serve as true guardians of the grid — protecting the lines that keep our community powered and connected.
