Carroll White REMC has a long tradition of supporting programs that benefit youth in our service territory. We support opportunities for students to learn more about energy, the cooperative business model, history, government, leadership, and much more, said CEO Cathy Raderstorf. We believe time and money invested in youth education and enrichment reap countless rewards.
REMC is indeed a champion for youth education, echoed Casey Crabb, REMC communications and public relations manager. In recent years, we started a REMC Junior Board of Directors to teach high school students about board governance, community, and leadership. This sponsorship added to our existing youth programs, which annually enrich the lives of so many.
We want to remind members of the opportunities that exist for students, said Crabb. Please note applications, deadline dates, and complete details are available at cwremc.coop/youth.
CAMP KILOWATT
Annually, students entering seventh grade in the fall have an opportunity to attend a summer camp that strikes a balance between education and fun, said Crabb. Camp Kilowatt is a free, three-night, four-day experience at Camp Tecumseh, a 660-acre, renowned YMCA camp near Brookston in White County. This location is great for our students as they are close to home.
Carroll White REMC is especially proud of Camp Kilowatt, formerly Touchstone Energy Camp, because the idea and driving force behind this camp was championed by retired REMC employee, Peg Minnicus, stated Crabb. Peg had the vision and leadership to get this camp going, and we are celebrating over 20 years of its existence.
Students do not need to be the children of REMC members to attend. Online applications open on Nov. 1 and close on Feb. 13.
INDIANA YOUTH TOUR TO WASHINGTON, D. C.
For over 50 years, the best and brightest Indiana high school juniors, who will enter their senior year in the fall, visit the nations capital on the annual Indiana Youth tour, said Raderstorf. This free, seven-day trip is action-packed with learning opportunities and impressive historic sights. The students share life-long memories and friendships.
Students tour Gettysburg National Military Park Battlefield on the way to Washington D. C., visit iconic memorials, tour Arlington National Cemetery, and explore the Smithsonian museums, said Raderstorf. They also visit with Indianas congressional leaders and learn about laws that impact rural cooperatives in Indiana.
Students applying must be children of parents or guardians who are CW REMC members. Online applications open on Nov. 1 and close on Feb. 13.
PAGE DAY
High school students may apply to serve as pages to Indiana legislators, noted Crabb. Page Day gives students the opportunity to learn about their state government while providing other educational activities. Highlights include a tour of the State House, mock bill activity, and speaker sessions.
Students do not need parents or guardians who are Carroll White REMC members to apply. Online applications open on Nov. 1 and close Jan. 9.
Because one of our cooperative principles is Commitment to Community, we provide these various opportunities for students, said Raderstorf. Carroll White REMC is proud of this tradition of enriching the lives of students, our future leaders.
