The Derby General Store is far more than a place to grab gas or groceries — it is a cornerstone of community life and a living piece of local history.

Built in 1962, it became the “Derby General Store” in 1984, when it was purchased by locals Billy and Marilyn Mogan with the goal of serving the everyday needs of locals while creating a welcoming gathering place. More than 40 years later, that vision continues under second-generation ownership. Today, the store is owned and operated by their son, Adam Mogan, and his wife, Jennifer. Both Adam and Jennifer were born and raised in the Derby area, with family roots extending more than 200 years in Perry County. Their deep local roots shape the way they run their business, with community always at the center.

The Derby General Store offers a wide range of goods and services that blend tradition with modern convenience. Customers can purchase gas, groceries, hardware supplies, bait and tackle, and browse a curated selection of gourmet candy, gifts, wine, and beer. Additionally, Jennifer creates and sells handcrafted stoneware pottery, and the store’s deli is a local favorite, known for made-to-order sandwiches, pizza, and strombolis that draw both residents and visitors.

During the summer months, Derby welcomes an influx of boaters, fishermen, campers, cabin renters, and travelers. The store rents kayaks and plays an active role in this seasonal energy by hosting community events, including a flea market, kids’ art classes, live music, and the annual Bob Thomas “Big Cat” Youth Fishing Tournament, held in conjunction with Indiana’s Free Fishing Day.

The Derby General Store is proud to host the Derby River Jam outdoor concert series. This year’s series holds special significance as it celebrates America 250, featuring performances by Jacob Lawalin, Kelly Clark, and Isaac Corley.

Through family ownership, diverse offerings, and a strong commitment to free community events, the Derby General Store remains a place where neighbors gather, visitors are welcome, traditions continue, and memories are made. It’s an enduring symbol of hometown pride in Derby, Indiana.
