With this issue focused on all things Annual Meeting, it’s a good time to step back to the basics and look at what the Annual Meeting really is and how it has grown alongside the members it serves.

For decades, the Annual Meeting was a single moment in time. One evening, one location, one opportunity to take part. Members would gather — often in a packed gymnasium or community space — to hear updates on the cooperative, vote on board leadership, and visit face-to-face with neighbors and employees. It was as much a community tradition as it was a business meeting.

But like the communities we serve, member needs have changed. Schedules are busier. Expectations are different. And participation looks different from what it did years ago. Decatur County REMC listened.

What was once a one-night event has evolved into a more flexible, member-focused experience. Today, participation isn’t limited to being in a seat at a specific time. Members can take part through early voting, secure electronic voting, and a variety of formats designed to fit real life.

That evolution has also changed what an “Annual Meeting” looks like. While in-person gatherings still offer the chance to connect and ask questions, other options have made it easier than ever to be involved. Whether you prefer a conversation, a click, or a quick stop, there’s now a way to participate that works for you.

Through all of this change, the purpose hasn’t shifted. The Annual Meeting remains a reflection of what makes a cooperative different — it’s member-owned, member-driven, and built on participation.

It’s where transparency meets accountability. It’s where leadership is chosen.

And most importantly, it’s where every member has a voice.

From packed gymnasiums to online ballots, the format may look different today, but the foundation is the same. Decatur County REMC belongs to its members — and every vote, every question, and every interaction continues to shape its future.
