Since launching in May 2013, WIN Energy REMC’s Operation Round Up program has donated nearly $800,000 to non-profit organizations in the communities we serve. One recent recipient is the Union Fire Department.

The volunteer department, located in Hazleton and serving Washington and Clay Townships, applied for a $4,250 grant in March 2025 to purchase a generator. Chief Jesse Akers was thrilled to receive the funding, noting that the generator will ensure volunteers can respond to calls during power outages. It will power communications equipment, lights, garage doors, and the furnace. Akers added that the station could also serve as a warming center or meeting place during outages. The department also received a grant previously in June 2024 to buy five gauges for one of its trucks.

The department has 28 volunteers, with seven to nine typically responding to each call. Most of its funding comes from township support, local income tax, fundraisers, and grants such as Operation Round Up. Akers said the group focuses on purchasing only essential supplies and plans to submit another application soon, calling Operation Round Up a valuable resource for nonprofits in their service territory.
