On Oct. 1, 2025, Southeastern Indiana REMC will implement a rate adjustment that will affect most members monthly bills. We know that any change to your electric costs raises important questions: Why now? How much will it impact me? And what resources are available to help me manage my bill?

This article is designed to answer those questions and provide context about why this adjustment is necessary and how Southeastern Indiana REMC is working to continue providing safe, reliable, and affordable power to our members.

Why the change is necessary

Like all cooperatives, SEI REMC is not-for-profit. That means we dont answer to shareholders we answer to you, our members. Every dollar collected is reinvested into maintaining and improving the electric system that powers your homes, farms, and businesses.

Over the past several years, costs associated with producing and delivering electricity have steadily increased. Fuel costs, materials, labor, and equipment are all more expensive than they were even a few years ago. On top of that, the need for technology and infrastructure upgrades has grown, especially as members rely on electricity more than ever for everything from remote work to electric vehicles.

While our cooperative has worked hard to manage expenses and delay the impact of rising costs, an adjustment is necessary to keep our system strong and reliable. Without this change, we risk falling behind on essential maintenance and upgrades that ensure the lights come on when you flip the switch.

What members can expect

The new rate structure, effective Oct. 1, will result in an average increase of about 8% for most residential members. That means if your typical bill is around $150 per month, you can expect an increase of about $12.

For some members, the impact may be slightly more or less, depending on your households energy use and whether you are on our standard residential rate or an alternative rate option like Time-of-Day. The new rates will first appear on your November bill.

While no one welcomes higher bills, these adjustments are essential for keeping your cooperative financially healthy and ensuring that our electric grid remains reliable for years to come.

How SEI REMC is helping members

We recognize that rate changes can create challenges, especially for members on fixed incomes or with tight budgets. Thats why were offering tools and resources to help you navigate these changes.

1. Rate comparison requests

If youre unsure whether your household is on the best available rate, our member services team can help. By reviewing your past energy use, we can prepare a personalized report that compares your current rate with alternatives such as the Time-of-Day rate. This analysis can help you make informed decisions and potentially reduce your monthly costs.

2. Budget Billing

To make bills more predictable, SEI REMC offers Budget Billing. With this program, your monthly bill is based on your average use, so you will pay roughly the same amount each month instead of seeing seasonal spikes in summer and winter. This option can make household budgeting much easier, particularly during months of high energy use.

3. Energy efficiency guidance

Our energy advisors are available to answer questions and provide guidance about reducing your energy use. Whether its upgrading appliances, improving insulation, or understanding how your household habits impact your bill, we can help identify opportunities to save energy and money.

A commitment to transparency

SEI REMC exists to serve you, not to profit from you. Rate adjustments are never made lightly. The decision to increase rates was carefully considered by your board of directors and cooperative leadership after an extensive review of our costs, system needs, and long-term financial health.

We remain committed to communicating openly about these changes and to working with members who may have concerns. Our goal is not just to keep the lights on today but to ensure that were investing in the infrastructure and technology needed to power our communities for decades to come.

Moving forward, together

This year marks 86 years of SEI REMC serving southeastern Indiana. Through world wars, economic downturns, and incredible technological change, our cooperative has always found ways to adapt and continue delivering on our promise of reliable, affordable electricity.

Todays challenges are no different. Rising costs are a reality for all of us, but by working together as a cooperative family, we can ensure that our communities continue to thrive.

We encourage members with questions or concerns to reach out. Whether you would like a rate comparison, want to sign up for Budget Billing, or simply need to talk through your options, our Member Services team is here to help.

Because at Southeastern Indiana REMC, we believe in more than just providing electricity we believe in powering lives, strengthening communities, and building a brighter future together.
