Each year, the student board at Miami-Cass REMC proves that leadership isnt just about holding a title its about making an impact. True to the electric cooperatives principle of Commitment to Community, these driven high schoolers are rolling up their sleeves to give back in a big way at this summers county fairs.
COMMUNITY SERVICE IN ACTION
This years community service project focuses on fighting food insecurity right here at home. The student board has coordinated two major collection events that will take place during the Miami County and Cass County fairs turning fun summer traditions into a chance to help those in need.
On June 24, students will be set up at the Miami County Fair, collecting non-perishable food items for a local food pantry. Fairgoers who donate two items per person will receive a discounted ride bracelet for the day, making it easy to enjoy the festivities while supporting a meaningful cause.
Then on July 8, they will bring their energy to the Cass County Fair for the Stock a Trailer event, where attendees can again donate non-perishable goods in exchange for a reduced-price ride bracelet. Its a win- win: fun for families, food for neighbors in need.
FUELED BY FUNDRAISING
To support their efforts, the student board got creative with a drive-thru chicken noodle dinner fundraiser earlier this year. Their hard work paid off literally. The event raised nearly $2,000, which will go directly toward covering the cost of the discounted ride bracelets for donors. Its a perfect example of how the students are learning to plan, organize, and execute projects that serve the broader community.
LOOKING AHEAD
The student board is more than just a leadership group its a hands-on experience in civic responsibility, event planning, and cooperative values. Each year, board members are tasked with designing both a fundraising event and a community service project, and their 2024-2025 efforts are already leaving a lasting impression.
Interested in joining? Applications for the 20252026 school year will be available at both the Miami and Cass County fairs. If you know a student whos passionate about making a difference, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved.
With compassion, teamwork, and a little bit of fairground magic, the Miami-Cass REMC Student Board is showing the community just how powerful young leaders can be.
