When temperatures drop, space heaters can be a great way to warm up cold corners of your home or take the edge off in rooms that need a boost. However, if used improperly, they can also pose serious safety risks, including fire and electric shock.

At Heartland REMC, your safety is our top priority. Here’s how to use your space heater wisely this winter:

Plug it directly into the wall

Never use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater, as they can overheat and spark a fire. Always plug directly into a wall outlet.

Keep a 3-foot safety zone

Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn, like curtains, furniture, blankets, bedding, and clothing.

Never leave it unattended

Turn off your heater when you leave the room or go to bed. Even units with timers or thermostats shouldn’t run unsupervised.

Use the right type of heater

Look for models with built-in tip-over and overheat protection, and always choose a product that is UL-listed or safety-certified.

Avoid bathroom use

Unless your unit is specifically rated for use in damp environments, do not use space heaters in bathrooms or areas with high moisture content. They pose an electrocution risk.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), space heaters are involved in over 40% of home heating fires and nearly 85% of related deaths.

A little caution goes a long way toward protecting your home, your family, and your peace of mind.
