ELECTRICAL SAFETY IS PROBABLY THE LAST THING THAT CROSSES ANYONES MIND ON A SUMMERTIME BOAT RIDE. BUT BECAUSE WATER AND ELECTRICITY ARE A DEADLY COMBINATION, BRUSH UP ON SOME BOATING SAFETY RULES.
Be aware of of power lines. Pay close attention when raising or lowering the boats mast or spar and ensure drying sails and sheet lines dont blow into power lines.
Be aware of signs marking the location of underwater utility lines. Dont anchor your boat near them.
Going fishing? Again, check for overhead power lines first – then cast your line.
If your boat comes in contact with a power line, whatever you do, dont jump in the water. Stay on board and dont touch anything made of metal. Dont leave the boat until it has moved away from the power line.
If you notice a tingling sensation while swimming, the water could be electrified. Get out quickly, avoiding metal objects like ladders.
