As the weather begins to cool this month and we focus on end-of-season yardwork and outdoor projects, its a good time to review some essential outdoor electrical safety tips. Whether trimming trees, cleaning up storm debris, or putting away summer equipment, keeping safety in mind can prevent serious accidents.

Heres what every Heartland REMC member should know:

LOOK UP BEFORE YOU TRIM

Tree limbs near power lines may seem harmless, but they pose serious risks. Always keep a minimum of 10 feet between you and overhead lines. If limbs are growing too close to lines, never try to trim them yourself. Call us instead. Our crews are trained and equipped to handle those situations safely.

KEEP TOOLS AND LADDERS CLEAR OF LINES

Metal ladders, poles, and even long-handled tools can easily make contact with power lines if youre not paying close attention. Be especially cautious when cleaning gutters, hanging lights, or performing roof maintenance.

KNOW WHERE CORDS AND OUTLETS ARE

Inspect outdoor outlets and extension cords for damage. Use only cords rated for outdoor use, and never overload them. Keep cords out of walkways and protect them from water exposure. Also, make sure any outlets in damp or wet locations are GFCI-protected.

CALL BEFORE YOU DIG

Are you planning to plant trees, install a fence, or build a deck? Call 811 before any digging project. Utility lines may be buried just inches below the surface, and striking one can be dangerous and expensive.

Your safety is our priority. If you spot downed lines, damaged poles, or suspicious electrical equipment, call Heartland REMC immediately. Never assume a line is de-energized, even if its not sparking.
