Air conditioning costs can really heat up your summer energy bills. Save money and stay cool with these cost-saving measures.

Hot summer days are great for traveling and outdoor fun, but unless you reduce air conditioning costs, your summer energy bills may rise along with the thermostat. The following tips will help you save money while staying cool on those scorching summer days:

GET A CHECKUP. Have your air conditioner inspected by a qualified professional. Typically, this service includes checking refrigerant levels, the compressor, hoses, ductwork, and the thermostat.

ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT. Set your thermostat to a comfortable setting when you’re home and turn it up to save energy when you’re away. A programmable thermostat can optimize your savings and add convenience. Smart models provide advanced features, such as self-programming and remote control.

CHANGE YOUR FILTER. Replace air conditioner filters regularly, following manufacturer guidelines. Dirty filters restrict airflow, making your system work harder.

BLOCK SOLAR HEAT GAIN. On warm and sunny days, close south- and west-facing window coverings to lower solar heat gain, keep your home cooler, and reduce the need for air conditioning.

USE CEILING FANS. Turn on ceiling or room fans in occupied areas to keep air moving and make the room feel cooler. In summer, ceiling fans should spin counterclockwise to create a downdraft and push cooler air down. Turn off fans in empty rooms to avoid wasting energy.

Upgrade for more savings

If your air conditioning unit is older or needs repair, consider replacing it with a new, more efficient model. You may also be eligible for federal tax credits and rebates that can significantly cut the cost of upgrading. Be sure to check out available rebates at bremc.com/rebates.

Save energy all year long

Conservation should be a year-round effort. Seal air leaks in your attic and basement and gaps around doors and windows with weather stripping and caulk.
