Ready for the unexpected: How to prepare for winter storms

Indiana weather can be unpredictable and winter is no exception. Heavy snow, freezing rain, and high winds can cause power outages that range from a few minutes to several hours or more. At Heartland REMC, we work hard to keep your power on year-round, but during extreme weather events, outages can still occur.

Being prepared can help you stay safe, warm, and connected if the power goes out this winter. Here are some tips to get you ready for winter storm season:

STOCK UP ON ESSENTIALS

Keep flashlights, extra batteries, nonperishable food, bottled water, and medications on hand. Use candles as a last resort, as they pose a fire hazard.

CHARGE YOUR DEVICES EARLY

Charge cell phones, power banks, and other essential electronics ahead of incoming storms.

HAVE BACKUP HEAT OPTIONS

If you rely on electric heat, consider having an alternative heat source, such as a wood stove, gas fireplace, or portable propane heater rated for indoor use.

Proper venting is essential for any heat source, and outdoor grills should never be used indoors.

PREPARE YOUR HOME

Seal windows and doors to prevent drafts and protect exposed pipes from freezing. Have blankets and warm layers ready.

CONSIDER A STANDBY GENERATOR

A backup generator can keep your lights, heat, and refrigerator running during prolonged outages. Heartland REMC now offers a Whole Home Generator Purchasing Program. Learn more at heartlandremc.com/generators.

Winter weather may be out of your control, but being prepared isnt. From safety tips to backup power options, Heartland REMC is here to help you face whatever the season brings.
