As technology changes, so do the tricks scammers use. What used to be in-person scams have become more sophisticated schemes targeting individuals through phone calls, emails, and text messages. One of the most common scams we’re seeing now is utility scams, where fraudsters pretend to be from your utility company and try to steal money from you. With so many of us relying on digital services for electricity, water, and gas, it’s more important than ever to stay alert.
Imposter scams are the most common type of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These scammers will act like they’re from a utility company, telling you your bill is overdue, threatening to disconnect your service, or demanding immediate payment to avoid penalties. Their goal is to create panic and pressure you into acting fast without having time to think or verify if the situation is real.
We’ve heard from members who’ve received calls from scammers claiming their electric bill is overdue. They ask for payment to be made through methods like prepaid cards or wire transfers, which are harder to trace.
The good news is that many of our members have been smart and cautious when dealing with these scams. Instead of rushing to make a payment, they’ve taken the time to contact us directly to verify their account is not past due, or they have hung up and reported the scam to us. If you ever get a suspicious call, text, or email, always reach out to us. Don’t use the contact details the scammer gives you, but instead, use the phone number listed on your bill or our website. Keep in mind that we don’t disconnect service without giving prior notice or trying to resolve any issues with you. Plus, we do not accept prepaid cards or wire transfers as payment methods.
Scammers are getting clever, too. They may use caller ID spoofing to make it look like the call is coming from us, or they might create fake websites and emails that look just like ours. The best way to protect yourself is by staying aware. If something feels off or just doesn’t seem right, don’t hesitate to reach out to us — or the company the caller claims to represent — to verify the situation.
At Kankakee Valley REMC, we’re committed to keeping you informed and protected. We’ll always communicate with you in clear, official ways about any account issues or overdue bills.
