Envirowatts grant

The LaGrange County Parks Department recently received a $2,000 EnviroWatts grant from LaGrange County REMC. The department requested this funding to help restore 1.5 acres of degraded ground at David Rogers Park in Wolcottville. The money will be used to purchase native prairie seed to reestablish a native, flower-heavy prairie.

The Parks Department hosts forest school programs and summer camp for youth, in and around the community, at David Rogers Park. The organization hopes to further these opportunities with public and private school tours, highlighting the importance and beauty of using native plants. They are expecting the restoration of native prairie with the intent to attract wildlife and pollinators.

David Rogers Park is utilized for wedding, senior, and natural photography. The Parks Department planted a zinnia patch along the south drive in the spring of 2024 in an effort to make an inviting entrance and draw people into the park to enjoy the historic cabins, rent the facilities, and enjoy nature.

EnviroWatts is only possible because of our members. Those who participate pay an additional one cent for their first 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) each month. Those kilowatt-hours are then generated from renewable, environmentally preferred sources, and those pennies go directly back into the community through grants to improvement initiatives like this one.

Members who contributed to the EnviroWatts program should be proud of the project their dollars made possible.

Mark your calendars to sign up for EnviroWatts this Earth Day, April 22, by visiting lagrangeremc.com/programs or calling the office at 877-463-7165.
