SUPPORTING THE JASPER COUNTY SHERIFF’S K-9 PROGRAM

At Jasper County REMC, we believe in the power of community. Through Operation Round Up, our members come together to support local programs that make a real difference right here at home. One recent grant recipient, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department K-9 program, is a strong example of that impact in action.

The department currently has three working canines serving alongside their handlers. These highly trained dogs play an important role in keeping our communities safe, assisting with everything from locating missing persons to detecting illegal substances. With one K-9 nearing retirement, the department is planning ahead and working to add a fourth handler and canine to ensure continued coverage across Jasper County.

A K-9’s career is both demanding and rewarding. Most working canines retire between the ages of 8 and 10, depending on their health and physical condition. When they retire, these loyal partners remain with their handlers, transitioning into a well-deserved life at home with the families they have served alongside.

Training is at the heart of every successful K-9 team. Handlers and their dogs begin with several weeks of intensive instruction in obedience, scent detection, tracking, and apprehension. That training continues throughout their careers, with regular exercises to maintain certifications and keep skills sharp. This ongoing commitment ensures each team is ready to respond when needed and helps build the strong bond that is essential in the field.

There is no typical day for a K-9 team. These dogs patrol alongside their handlers, participate in training, and respond to a variety of calls. Whether assisting in a search, tracking a suspect, or supporting an investigation, they are always ready to serve. When the workday ends, they go home with their handlers and become part of the family, reflecting the unique partnership they share.

The K-9 program is a valuable asset to our community. These dogs enhance public safety while helping reduce risk for both officers and residents. Their specialized skills allow situations to be handled more efficiently and effectively.

Support from programs like Operation Round Up helps make this work possible. Hidden #11513002. Funding from members helps cover the cost of training, equipment, and veterinary care, ensuring these K-9s remain healthy and ready for service. It also helps the department plan for the future as they work to grow and sustain the program.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department continues to seek support for its K-9 program. If you are interested in contributing, you can mail a check to 2171 N. McKinley Ave., Rensselaer, IN, or call 219-866-7334 for more information.
