Where art, wine, and nature intertwine above the Ohio River

Perched on a high hill overlooking the scenic Ohio River and just upstream from the Cannelton Locks & Dam, Blue Heron Winery is a haven for wine lovers, art enthusiasts, and nature seekers alike. Owned by retired educators Lynn and Gary Dauby, this winery blends breathtaking views, creative expression, and a welcoming spirit into every glass.

The winery gets its name from the elegant blue herons often spotted along the nearby river and Deer Creek. Lynn, a Perry County art teacher for over 30 years, brings an artistic touch to the tasting room and gift shop, while Gary, an artist and biologist, tends the vineyards and helps craft the wines. The land has deep family roots — it once belonged to Gary’s father, Gervase Dauby, and has been explored and cherished by Gary since childhood.

After planting their first grapes in 1996, the Daubys earned their winemaking license in 2008. Gary sharpened his craft through Purdue University courses and hands-on workshops. Today, he oversees the vineyards with help from friends like Carl Clarke. Their estate-grown Chambourcin grapes thrive alongside other varietals such as Traminette (Indiana’s state grape), Vignoles, Vidal, and Norton. Fruit wines, including cherry and blueberry, honor their children’s military service through patriotic labels.

Art is as prominent as wine at Blue Heron. The property is home to what is believed to be the world’s largest in situ Celtic Cross, carved over two years by artist Greg Harris from a massive 24-foot sandstone boulder. Harris also crafted a bust of Governor Edgar Whitcomb on-site, now displayed at the Indiana Statehouse. His carvings and installations — including the winery’s grand wooden doors — add rich layers to the winery’s unique character.

Guests can stay overnight at one of two on-site cottages: Above & Beyond, overlooking the river, and Cru-View, nestled in the vineyard. Both are perfect getaways for couples or small groups looking to relax in a peaceful, artistic setting.

Music lovers flock to Blue Heron’s seasonal concert series. “Music on the Patio” offers laid-back afternoon tunes and picnic vibes, while “Wine Over Water (WOW) brings lively evening concerts with food trucks and larger bands — from jazz to Irish folk. Upcoming schedules are listed at blueheronvines.com

The winery is open Fridays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT and later on concert evenings. They’re happy to host private events such as showers, meetings, yoga sessions, and paint parties with advance notice.

You never know who you might run into at Blue Heron — Miss Americas, Colts cheerleaders, NASA engineers, even National Geographic scientists have walked through their doors. But no matter who visits, the Daubys say the best part of running the winery is always the people they meet.
