It’s November — the time of year for reflection and giving thanks. Pressing that “pause” button to count — and give thanks for — our blessings is not only a Thanksgiving tradition for your family, but also ours at Kankakee Valley REMC.

I like to use this space to update you on new projects, developments or happenings at your cooperative.  However, this month, as we prepare to join our friends and family around the Thanksgiving table, I believe it is equally important to describe the impact you have on the co-op and the community we serve.

A defining characteristic of a cooperative is our “concern for community.” As a co-op member-consumer, you are a vital part of our community outreach. For years, Kankakee Valley REMC has assisted local organizations that share the co-op’s community-focused goals.  Each time we ask for help to support others, our membership answers the call. From your participation in our annual Pack-a-Backpack program to the Ronald McDonald House Charities donations, you are impacting the co-op and the greater community in ways you probably didn’t know.

More than 70 percent of our member-consumers participate in Operation Round Up Trust. This program, which began at our co-op 19 years ago, embodies the true meaning of community and making a difference.  I am impressed by the impact that rounding up an electric bill can have.  To date, your efforts have provided over $1.3 million to organizations that help our area residents in need.

Our employees are a catalyst for giving too. Since they live and work in the community, they are personally committed to its success. Believers in volunteerism, they give their time and talents to local food pantries, building projects, coaching Little League and track, serving as a volunteer fireman or supporting school programs to benefit youth. No matter how great or small the act, every time we give back, we, too, are strengthening the community.

Community involvement is truly a simple way to show our gratitude. I am thankful to lead the cooperative. I’m also thankful for the talented group of employees who work alongside me.

Though we don’t say it enough, I thank you for supporting your cooperative and the local community we all call home.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
