Level out your electric bill with budget billing

Seasonal weather can make electric bills unpredictable. Hot summers and cold winters often bring higher energy use, which can lead to fluctuating monthly bills. Steuben County REMC’s budget billing program helps members manage those changes by spreading energy costs more evenly throughout the year.

Budget billing works by averaging your electric use over an 11-month period to determine a consistent monthly payment. Instead of large swings in your bill during peak heating or cooling months, this program helps keep your payments more stable and predictable.

Who is eligible?

To enroll in the budget billing program:

  • Your electric service must have been in your name since June 1, 2025.
  • Your account must be paid in full before enrollment.
  • You must remain current on your bill during the budget billing period.

How the program works

Budget billing amounts are based on your previous 12 months’ of electric use. Because energy use can change over time, your monthly budget amount may be recalculated once or twice during the year to keep the payment aligned with your actual use. Budget participants should watch their Account Summary balance on their monthly bill.

At the beginning of each calendar year, accounts are reviewed and the monthly budget amount may be adjusted. Any remaining credit or debit balance at the end of the budget year is settled during the June billing cycle through a “true- up” adjustment.

Enrollment information

Members interested in budget billing should contact the Steuben County REMC office at 260-665-3563 before Friday, May 29. The new budget cycle begins with the July billing (due in August).

Agreement letters are not required. Once you request enrollment, your account will be automatically added to the program. Members may request to be removed from the program at any time. However, if you miss a payment or request removal, you will not be eligible to re-enroll until the following year’s budget cycle.
