CEO
I find myself standing at the close of one chapter and the beginning of another as I retire from Jasper County REMC. It’s both humbling and deeply meaningful to look back on two decades of growth, challenge, and community, and to realize how much we have accomplished together.
Twenty-one years ago, after completing my computer science degree at St. Joseph’s College, I was seeking a full-time job. The career counselor at St. Joe’s said there was a possible opening at a local business in town. I interviewed for a billing and information technology support position. I had no idea that accepting this job would lead to a long-term career. As I learned the rural electric cooperative business model, I was drawn to the cooperative difference. The idea that we exist not for profit, but for the benefit of the members we serve.
I eventually became the first full-time IT employee. Over time, technology has evolved, new energy demands have emerged, and our members’ expectations have changed. I have been involved in several major projects throughout my career. One notable highlight is the update to our main software suite. This change led to an internal application for our employees, and an outward-facing Smarthub application for our members.
This proved to be a crucial communications improvement as we entered the COVID years. Having the correct software has proven to be a vital component in keeping up with the many changes in our industry.
The last four years as CEO have brought their share of challenges, from navigating storms and supply chain disruptions to building the Connect fiber business from the ground up. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our employees and board of directors. Their commitment has consistently proven that a small organization can achieve great things.
It has been an honor to be a part of this cooperative’s story and to know it will continue to grow in capable hands. I leave with full confidence that the employees and board will carry forward the commitment to affordable and reliable electric and fiber services.
Though I am retiring from my role, my belief in the cooperative model and its power to make a difference in people’s lives will remain steadfast. Here’s to bright days ahead — both for our cooperative and for the communities we proudly serve.
