Each year on June 14, Americans across the country take a moment to honor the red, white, and blue during the celebration of Flag Day. This special day is dedicated to recognizing the American flag as a powerful symbol of our nations identity, pride, and the hard-won freedoms we cherish. At Southeastern Indiana REMC, we deeply value what the flag represents: freedom, unity, and a shared commitment to service.

The history behind the flag

The origins of Flag Day date back to June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress approved the first official design of the United States flag. The resolution declared that the flag would feature thirteen alternating red and white stripes, representing the original colonies, and thirteen white stars on a field of blue, symbolizing a new constellation and the birth of a nation.

Since that time, the flag has undergone many changes, growing with the country to include a star for each of the 50 states. While the design has evolved, the meaning behind it has remained the same. The flag continues to stand as a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the American people.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation encouraging the national celebration of Flag Day. However, it was not until 1949 that Flag Day was officially established as a day of national observance when President Harry S Truman signed it into law. This act reinforced the flags significance in American history and ensured its legacy would be honored every year on June 14.
