During the summer months (June, July, and August) and the winter months (December, January, and February), electricity demand is at its highest typically on the hottest and coldest days of the month. These are known as the peak of the month.
During the peak hour of the month, our power supplier, Hoosier Energy, charges us based on the highest peak usage. That means the more electricity we all use during this peak hour, the more we all pay. But by working together to reduce usage during these predicted times, we can help lower costs for everyone.
Why does electricity cost more during peak times?
When demand spikes, more expensive power sources must be used to meet the need driving up costs. In contrast, demand is typically much lower in the spring and fall, when our standard baseload generation is sufficient.
