Do you have lights that flicker? If you do, you know how annoying this can be. Here are some common reasons why this happens. Before you begin any work, be safe with electric components and wiring. Switch off power at your circuit breaker panel and test your work area for energized wires using a voltage tester. If you are not comfortable working around electric components, hire a licensed electrician.

COMMON CAUSES OF LIGHT FLICKER

THE SOCKET IS CORRODED
You can identify this is the cause if you tap the area around the bulb causing it to flicker.

SOLUTION: Replace the socket

WALL SWITCH FAILURE
If your wall switch feels spongy and does not quickly snap on and off, this can cause light flicker.

SOLUTION: Replace the switch

LED LIGHTS
Many LED bulbs are not compatible with older dimmer switches. Flickering can also come from the bulb itself as it might not be compatible with a dimmer.

SOLUTION: Upgrade your dimmer switch and/or try a bulb that is compatible with dimmers

VOLTAGE FLUCTUATIONS
Some LED bulbs might flicker when a device that uses a lot of voltage turns on and off such as a HVAC unit. While this can be due to the sensitivity of the bulb itself, it could also be a sympton of a larger issue with your electrical system.

SOLUTION: To determine if the flicker is a symptom of a larger issue, consult a licensed electrician to review your homes electric system.
