The energy sector is changing and technology is becoming critical to everything we do. In fact, we’re deploying a fiber ring on our system to support these changes.

Through the fiber optic project, we’re installing a reliable high-speed backbone communication pathway between the KV REMC headquarters and its electrical distribution substations. The co-op will use the fiber to carry critical system data back from each substation to the corporate office. Having access to this data in near real-time will help us make operational decisions.

During the second phase, the cooperative will use the fiber ring to integrate smart grid solutions into the current electric system. Building a smart grid benefits the cooperative operationally, but also provides the co-op membership with tools to make an educated decision relating to their energy use.   

In the future, the installed infrastructure may allow an Internet service provider the means to provide broadband access to the area. But at this time, the equipment will only address the co-op’s needs.  

To complete the fiber ring project, Kankakee Valley REMC has contracted with Yates Engineering and ElectriCom. Yates Engineering is providing the fiber optic engineering services while ElectriCom will place the buried and aerial fiber on the system. 

During the project construction, you may see an ElectriCom truck go by or an employee in front of your home installing the hardware required for the fiber optic cable. The work being done will not affect your electrical service. If at any time you have questions regarding the project, please feel free to call the office.
