Heartland REMC wants you to be aware of ongoing phone and email scams that are targeting members.

Phone scammers posing as Heartland REMC, by rigging the caller ID to make it look like a Heartland REMC phone number, will call and tell you that your account has been “red flagged” for disconnection due to non-payment.  They will threaten to turn off your power within the hour if you do not pay.  The scammers will instruct you to put the money on a prepaid debit card and ask for the card number.

Don’t believe it.

Heartland REMC would NEVER ask a member to get a prepaid card to avoid disconnection. Also, if we ever call you, we will have your account number and any personal information we need. WE WILL NOT ASK YOU FOR IT.

DO NOT pay over the phone if immediate payment is demanded.

Here is what to do if a call seems suspicious:

  1. Hang up.
  2. Call the utility provider using the phone number on your bill.
  3. Call the police.

We’ve all heard of these scams and sometimes wonder how people can be duped. However, these callers can sound very intimidating and persuasive. Don’t fall for it! Please share this alert with friends and family for their protection as well.
