Please don’t attach items to power poles

Pole with nails

At Heartland REMC, safety is always our top priority for our members and the crews who work hard to keep the power on. Recently, we’ve noticed more people attaching items to our poles, such as yard sale signs, posters, flags, balloons, and decorations. While it might seem like a convenient spot, attaching anything to a power pole is both dangerous and prohibited.

Our poles are not just pieces of wood along the roadside. Theyre part of a system that carries high-voltage electricity. When someone drives nails, staples, or screws into a pole to hang a sign or decoration, it creates serious risks. These objects can tear protective gloves or puncture safety equipment for our linemen. A single tear could expose them to thousands of volts of electricity. In addition, the holes left behind weaken the integrity of the pole itself, shortening its lifespan and making it less stable.

There are also risks to the public. Signs, flags, or balloons can block a drivers view, become loose in bad weather, or even blow into power lines, causing outages or fires. What might seem like a simple shortcut to display a message could easily create a dangerous situation for you and your neighbors.

If you want to advertise an event or decorate for a special occasion, please use alternatives such as yard stakes, fence posts, or other safe mounting options. Keeping power poles clear helps protect our crews and ensures reliable service for everyone in our community.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our system safe. By working together, we can ensure the well-being of our linemen and the safety of our community.
