The hidden dangers of pole attachments

Utility pole with nails

Recently, weve seen an increase in signs and decorations being attached to utility poles throughout our service area. Whether advertising a lost pet, promoting a community event, or adding festive decorations, placing anything on a utility pole puts our lineworkers at risk.

It may seem harmless to use staples, nails, or tacks to hang a sign, but these fasteners can puncture or tear the specialized protective gear our crews rely on to prevent electric shock. Even the smallest hole in rubber gloves or sleeves can compromise their insulation and potentially lead to a life-threatening situation.

In addition to damaging gear, these attachments create obstacles for crews who often work in difficult conditions (including during storms or at night) to restore your power safely and quickly. Every added hazard on a pole increases the danger of their job and can slow down repairs.

Henry County REMC asks all members to help keep our crews safe. Never attach anything to utility poles no signs, lights, balloons, or decorations. Our lineworkers are committed to serving you safely. Lets return the favor by keeping their work environment as safe as possible.
