Summer is a time for swimming, boating, and enjoying the great outdoors — but it’s also important to keep safety top of mind, especially when it comes to water and electricity.
Water safety
Always supervise children near water, even if they know how to swim. Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Make sure kids wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or around open water. Consider learning CPR — it’s a life-saving skill that could make a difference in an emergency. If you have a home pool, install secure fencing, use alarms, and monitor water quality regularly.
Electric safety
Electricity and water are a dangerous combination. Keep all electrical devices, cords, and outlets away from pools, hot tubs, and wet areas. Use GFCI outlets outdoors and in bathrooms to help prevent shocks. Only use extension cords labeled for outdoor use and never overload them. Remind children to stay away from power lines, electrical boxes, and substations. If a ball or pet gets too close to electrical equipment, call BCREMC instead of trying to retrieve it yourself.
By staying aware and prepared, you can enjoy a safe, worry-free summer season with the people you care about most.
