As combines roll into fields across Indiana this month, farm safety moves back to the top of mind for growers, families, and rural communities alike. Harvest is one of the busiest — and most dangerous — times of the year on the farm. Long hours, big equipment, and the pressure to beat the weather can add up to serious risk.

A few minutes of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret. Follow these guidelines to stay safe: 

Look up

Look up and plan your route before you start.

Keep your distance

Keep at least 10 feet of clearance between equipment and overhead power lines in all directions — more if lines carry higher voltage.

Lower it down

Lower augers and elevators fully before moving them between locations.

Caution when wet

Remember that non-metallic materials like grain, augers, and hydraulic hoses can still conduct electricity, especially when wet.
