The Kankakee Valley REMC Junior Board of Directors wrapped up its eight-month leadership program by making a meaningful impact in the community through its annual service project.

At the end of June, the students hosted a cornhole tournament and car show at the Porter County Fairgrounds, bringing together community members, car enthusiasts, local businesses, and supporters for a day of fun, friendly competition, and philanthropy.

Through sponsorships, donations, and event participation, the students raised an impressive $6,440 for the Play For Jake Foundation of La Porte.

Community service is a key component of the Junior Board program. Throughout the year, students complete individual volunteer hours in their communities. For every hour served, Kankakee Valley REMC contributes funding through Operation Round Up, which is then used to support the students’ group community service project.

This year, students chose to support the Play For Jake Foundation, an organization dedicated to preventing sudden cardiac arrest in youth through education, awareness, and access to lifesaving equipment. Founded in memory of Jake West, a 17-year-old LaPorte High School student-athlete who passed away from an undetected heart condition, the foundation works to ensure automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available in schools, athletic facilities, public venues, and emergency response vehicles.

“The students this year showed great leadership and a desire to truly make a difference in their community,” said Amanda Steeb, director of marketing and communications. “They took on the challenge of planning and organizing a large public event and worked together to make it a success”

The success of the event reflects the dedication, teamwork, and leadership skills developed throughout the Junior Board program. By working together toward a common goal, these students demonstrated how young people can create positive change and strengthen the communities they serve.
