BCREMC is committed to keeping members informed about what drives the cost of your electric service, especially when it comes to wholesale power, which makes up over 75% of our total cost to serve you.

The power we purchase from our wholesale power provider, Hoosier Energy, fluctuates due to factors such as fuel costs, market pricing, inflation, and rising prices for materials and equipment needed to operate and maintain generation assets and the electric transmission system. To reflect these changes, your bill includes a Wholesale Power Tracker, a direct pass-through based on your monthly kWh usage that reflects Hoosier Energy’s true-up, or adjustment, between power costs built into base rates and the actual cost of power. It is calculated monthly and adjusted quarterly to align with current power supply costs.

Beginning with bills issued in mid-July and early August, the Wholesale Power Tracker for the third quarter is set at $0.002624 per kWh.

BCREMC is currently absorbing a 17% wholesale power base rate increase implemented in April 2026. This increase is significant, and we are actively evaluating ways to best serve you while managing these cost pressures. Beginning in mid-July, the separate Utility Receipts Tax (URT) credit will no longer appear on your bill. Instead, those dollars will be retained to help offset BCREMC’s new revenue requirement resulting from higher wholesale power costs. This allows us to continue absorbing a portion of these additional costs and helps delay the need for a future rate increase for our members.

Our goal is simple: keep rates stable for as long as we can. In fact, BCREMC’s last base rate increase was in April 2018. Since then, we have worked hard to manage costs effectively, avoiding rate increases even as power supply and equipment costs have continued to rise.

We will continue managing expenses carefully and making decisions that balance affordability with the long-term strength of your cooperative, while continuing to provide safe and reliable electric service.
