At LaGrange County REMC, our story is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: neighbors working together to meet a need. Nearly 90 years ago, local farmers and families came together to bring electricity to rural LaGrange County — at a time when investor-owned utilities saw little incentive to serve our community. What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a trusted, member-owned cooperative that powers homes, farms, and businesses across the county.
While much has changed since those early days, our core values remain the same.
We are member-focused. Unlike traditional utilities, we are owned by the people we serve. That means every decision we make is guided by what’s best for our members — not shareholders. Whether it’s keeping rates as affordable as possible, improving reliability, or offering new programs and services, our focus is always on delivering value to you.
We believe in community. Our commitment goes beyond electricity. We live and work here, too. That’s why we invest in local events, support economic development, and partner with organizations that strengthen LaGrange County. From youth programs to community initiatives, we’re proud to play a role in helping our area thrive.
We prioritize reliability and safety. Providing safe, dependable power is our top responsibility. Over the decades, we’ve continuously invested in our infrastructure — upgrading lines, replacing equipment, and adopting new technologies — to ensure your lights stay on. At the same time, we never lose sight of safety, both for our employees and the public.
We operate with integrity and accountability. As a not-for-profit cooperative, every dollar we collect is used to operate and improve the system. When margins allow, we return capital credits back to our members — another way your ownership in REMC benefits you directly.
We look to the future while honoring our past. The energy landscape is evolving, and we are committed to adapting in ways that serve our members well — whether that’s exploring new technologies, enhancing communication, or finding innovative ways to manage costs. At the same time, we remain grounded in the cooperative principles that have guided us since the beginning.
After nearly 90 years of success, we expanded on our mission with a fiber optic broadband network to provide high-speed internet service. The nearly 5,000 subscribers who now rely on that service would likely argue that broadband internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity — much like electricity became over time.
As we reflect on our history, we are grateful for the generations of members who have shaped this cooperative. And as we look ahead, we remain committed to the values that brought us here: service, community, and a shared purpose.
Thank you for being part of the LaGrange County REMC family.
