Winter storms can create dangerous conditions on roads and around electrical equipment. Snow, ice, and high winds increase the risk of downed power lines and power outages. Staying alert while driving and using generators safely can help protect you and others.

DRIVING SAFELY AROUND POWER LINES

Winter weather can cause power lines or utility poles to fall into roadways or along shoulders. If you encounter a downed power line while driving, stay in your vehicle and keep a safe distance. Never drive over a power line or attempt to move it. If a power line falls on your vehicle, remain inside, call 911, and wait for help unless there is an immediate danger such as fire.

STAY AWAY FROM DOWNED POWER LINES

Always assume a downed power line is energized and dangerous, even if it is not sparking or making noise. Keep at least 30 feet away and make sure children and pets stay clear. Report downed lines to the cooperative as soon as possible.

GENERATOR SAFETY DURING OUTAGES

Generators can be helpful during outages, but they must be used correctly. Operate generators outdoors only and keep them away from windows, doors, and vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

For safety, plug appliances directly into the generator using heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use, or connect the generator to your home only through a correctly installed transfer switch. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet or home wiring without proper equipment, as this can send electricity back onto power lines and create a serious hazard for lineworkers and others.

BE ALERT AFTER THE STORM

Even after roads begin to clear, hazards may remain. Ice, snow, and fallen limbs can hide downed power lines along roads, driveways, and ditches. Use caution when traveling and avoid walking or driving through debris after a winter storm.
