Empowering the next generation with youth programs

At Bartholomew County REMC, supporting youth and education is an important part of our role as a local cooperative. Two programs we offer each year that help do this are the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour and Camp Kilowatt.

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, which began in 1964, has provided more than 55,000 students nationwide with the opportunity to visit Washington, D. C. Over the years, Bartholomew County REMC has sponsored approximately 120 students, selecting two local high school juniors each year to represent our cooperative. From June 14-21, this year’s Youth Tour delegates will travel to our nation’s capital on an all-expenses-paid trip that combines education, leadership, and firsthand civic experience.

During the week, students explore historic landmarks, museums, and national memorials, including sites such as the U.S. Capitol, the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, and Smithsonian museums. Participants also meet with elected officials on Capitol Hill to discuss issues important to their communities and gain insight into how public policy decisions are made. Youth Tour brings together more than 1,800 students from electric cooperatives across the country, giving participants the opportunity to build friendships while gaining a deeper understanding of American government, history, and the cooperative business model.

Youth Tour is more than a sightseeing experience. Students return home with a broader perspective, greater confidence, and a stronger appreciation for civic involvement and leadership. Additionally, they have the opportunity to present their experience at a BCREMC board meeting.

We also offer Camp Kilowatt, a summer camp experience for current sixth-grade students. Camp Kilowatt will be held July 26-29 at Happy Hollow Children’s Camp in Nashville, Indiana. It blends traditional summer camp activities with hands-on learning about energy. Campers learn about electricity generation, transmission, renewable energy, and electrical safety while also enjoying classic camp experiences such as swimming, archery, ziplining, climbing activities, and team games. The program encourages curiosity, teamwork, and confidence in a fun and engaging environment.

The Youth Tour application deadline is Feb. 13, while the Camp Kilowatt application deadline is May 1. I encourage families and educators to share these opportunities with students who may be interested. Additional details and application links can be found at IndianaEC.org/youth.

These programs have been meaningful to many local families over the years, and we appreciate the opportunity to continue offering them to the communities we serve.
