At Heartland REMC, keeping your power on is our top priority. However, when major storms, accidents, or equipment failures cause an outage, our restoration plan quickly kicks into action. While it may feel like the lights are off forever, a strategic process is happening behind the scenes to reconnect everyone safely and efficiently.
We follow a step-by-step restoration plan designed to restore service to the greatest number of members in the shortest time possible. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: High-voltage transmission lines
These large lines transport electricity from power generation plants to substations and carry power over long distances. They rarely go down, but when they do, they must be repaired first. Without them, nothing else in the system can be energized.
Step 2: Distribution substations
Next, we check the substations. These serve as local “power hubs” for thousands of homes and businesses. If the substation is damaged or is without power, everyone downstream is affected.
Step 3: Main distribution lines
These are the lines that run from substations to neighborhoods, towns, and essential facilities, such as schools, hospitals, and water treatment plants. We prioritize repairs to these areas next to bring service back to large groups of members.
Step 4: Individual homes and businesses
Finally, we address smaller tap lines and individual service connections. These are the lines that branch off main roads and serve single homes, farms, or buildings. If your neighbors have power but you don’t, you’re likely in this final stage of the restoration process.
Why it’s not always ‘first come, first restored’
We often hear the question: “Why does my neighbor have power, but I don’t?” The answer usually lies in where you are on the system. Even if your outages start around the same time, restoration depends on how lines are connected — not necessarily physical distance or timing.
You can always report outages and monitor updates using the HREMC App or by calling us at 260-758-3155.
Thank you for your patience and trust in your cooperative. We’re proud to power your homes and your lives — every day.
