When it comes to electricity in your home, it’s important to understand which equipment is the responsibility of the cooperative and which is the member’s. A simple rule of thumb is that the connection point between the cooperative’s wires and the member is the dividing line.

The service line from the utility pole to the weather head or underground connection in the meter base, the transformer, and the meter all belong to the cooperative.

If an outage occurs or equipment is damaged on this side, whether due to storms, fallen trees, or equipment failure, the cooperative is responsible for the repairs.

The meter base, riser/weather head, and service entrance cables for an overhead service, as well as the main breaker panel and wiring, outlets, and devices inside the home, are the member’s responsibility.

If any of this equipment is damaged by weather, accidents, or other causes, you are responsible for the repairs. In many cases, we will not restore power to your location until the repairs are made. This is for your safety and the safety of our employees.

Understanding who is responsible for equipment repairs and who bears the financial burden can prevent confusion and save time and money when issues arise.
