It’s that time of year again to celebrate the power of membership and to give you the credit you deserve for supporting your cooperative! As we close out 2025, I’m pleased to share some exciting news about your upcoming bills and the return of your investment in Bartholomew County REMC.

This year, Bartholomew County REMC is retiring $528,790 in capital credits from the year 1999, and our wholesale power provider, Hoosier Energy, is retiring an additional $323,939 from the years 1996 through 1999, and $397,297 from 2017. These refunds represent your share of the cooperative’s success and your contribution to the reliable, community-owned, electric provider we all depend on.

We’re also continuing the Wholesale Power Relief refund for December, extending financial support to all active members based on kilowatt-hour (kWh) use for the month. For the past three years, your board of directors has prioritized this initiative to help ease the impact of inflation and rising wholesale energy costs; another example of your cooperative’s commitment to putting members first.

Members with active service during the years being retired will receive their capital credit refund as a bill credit. if you receive your bill mid-month, your credit will appear on your December bill.

If you receive your bill at the beginning of the month, your credit will appear on your January bill.

When you joined Bartholomew County REMC, you became more than a customer; you became an owner. Unlike investor-owned utilities that pay profits to shareholders, we return margins to the people who use our service: you, our members. The amount of your refund is based on the amount of electricity you used during the years being retired.

Each year, if the cooperative’s financial condition allows, your board of directors approves a general retirement of capital credits. These funds are used as working capital for about 25 years to ensure the cooperative remains strong and financially sound before being paid back to members.

If you move and no longer receive service from BCREMC, please keep your mailing address updated with us so we can deliver any future capital credit payments. In the event of a member’s passing, all allocated capital credits can be paid in full to the spouse if the account was not a joint account. Just contact our office for details on the required documentation.

Capital credits are a hallmark of cooperative ownership, proof that our success is shared with the people we serve. We’re proud to continue returning value to our members and to operate from a place of financial stability and community commitment.

From all of us at Bartholomew County REMC, thank you for being an essential part of our cooperative family. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and joyful holiday season!
