As temperatures drop, fireplace maintenance should be at the top of the winter preparation list.

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, it’s time to start preparing your home for winter.  Winterizing your house not only protects it from harsh weather conditions but also helps you save energy and avoid costly repairs down the line. Here are some essential tips to ensure your home stays cozy all winter long:

1. Seal windows and doors: Check for drafts around windows and doors and use weatherstripping or caulking to seal any gaps.

2. Insulate pipes: Wrap exposed plumbing pipes in insulation sleeves to prevent them from freezing and bursting during cold temperatures.

3. Check your heating system: Schedule a professional inspection of your furnace or heating system to ensure it’s working efficiently.

4. Clean gutters and downspouts: Remove leaves and debris from gutters to prevent ice dams and ensure proper drainage during winter weather.

5. Inspect your roof: Check for missing or damaged shingles and repair them to prevent leaks from melting snow or ice.

6. Prepare the fireplace: Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before use to ensure safe ventilation and reduce fire hazards.

7. Stock up on winter supplies: Ensure you have shovels, ice melt, and other supplies ready for snow and icy conditions.

8. Insulate attic and walls: Add insulation to your attic and exterior walls to help retain heat and improve energy efficiency.

9. Reverse ceiling fans: Change the direction of your ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to circulate warm air that rises to the ceiling.

10. Protect outdoor faucets and furniture: Disconnect hoses and install insulation covers over outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and cracking. If possible, bring in outdoor furniture or cover the pieces to protect them from ice and snow.
