What started as a summer experiment with bees has quickly grown into a thriving small business for Paulding Putnam Electric member Halie Harting and her family.
Harting, who helps manage her familys seventh-generation farm, launched Harting Homesteaders in 2023 with her sister-in-law.
We wanted to contribute in our own way, she said. One day we saw a post from a local beekeeper selling all his equipment, and we just went for it even though we had no idea what we were doing!
They started small, creating honey-inspired gifts for their kids teachers, and before long, word spread. The homemade items were such a hit that demand soon pushed them beyond pop-up shops and farmers markets into a storefront in Convoy, Ohio.

Step inside Harting Homesteaders today, and you will find shelves lined with locally made treasures: dry cookie and bread mixes, herbal remedies, homemade extracts, natural cleaners, homegrown sunflower seeds, freezer beef, and of course raw and flavored honey. Among the most popular products are Hartings handcrafted body tallow, all-natural hair care line, and magnesium creams and sprays.
Most of what we sell is made right here by me, with a few special items from other local makers, Harting said. Everything reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and care for the community.
For Harting, the business is about much more than the products. Its about the people.
I love connecting with like-minded customers and other small business owners, she shared. Its so rewarding to show my kids what can grow from hard work, dedication, and prayer.
Shoppers who are Paulding Putnam members can also enjoy an added perk: Harting Homesteaders is part of the Co-op Connections program, meaning members can get $2 off $10 at the store.

With Small Business Saturday coming up, Harting Homesteaders is a great place to show your support for local businesses while picking up unique, handcrafted goods.
Supporting small businesses helps keep our towns strong,
Harting said. Its neighbors supporting neighbors and that makes all the difference.
