Operations Manager
At Decatur County REMC, the safety of our members and the reliability of our electric system are responsibilities we take very seriously. One area where this is especially important is your electric meter.
Only Decatur County REMC meter technicians and linemen are authorized to remove, reseal, or service electric meters. These employees are trained, equipped, and qualified to handle the work safely. Attempting to remove or tamper with a meter is not only dangerous and illegal it also violates Decatur County REMC policy.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
- Tampering is dangerous.
- A meter is live electrical equipment, and mishandling it can cause shock, fire, or even death.
- Tampering is theft. Unauthorized use of electricity drives up costs for all members of the co-op.
- Tampering has consequences. Service disconnection, back-billed charges, fines, and even prosecution can result.
- Tampering is detected. Through technology and inspections, we actively monitor for signs of tampering.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU NEED THE POWER SHUT OFF FOR WORK:
1. Call Decatur County REMC at 812-663-3391 to schedule a service disconnect. Be ready to provide the job address, contractor name, desired date/time, and a contact phone number.
2. For urgent or same-day needs, call us right away. Please do not attempt to touch or bypass the meter yourself.
3. If you notice a broken seal or any signs of tampering, report it immediately so our team can properly document and reseal the equipment.
A FEW IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
- Meters are the property of Decatur County REMC.
- Unauthorized meter pulls are considered tampering, even when performed by a licensed contractor.
- Tampering puts lives, property, and our electric system at risk.
At the end of the day, your meter is our responsibility. Keeping it that way ensures both your safety and the reliability of the power we deliver to your home or business.
